Earth Day

Cherie is on vacation this week and on her way out the door (well, almost) she said: "Why don't you remind folks about Earth Day this Tuesday?!" Sure, I thought! And how will I write a newsletter about that on short notice?

Of course the first thing I can do is point to just some of the new eco- friendly yarns we carry. Please see just a couple of them listed below. You can come in the store to see them or call us at 1 888 770 7809 to find out more.

Then I went online to see just what people are saying about "green" knitting and crocheting. Turns out, people do have varying opinions about that. The concern is not only about WHAT these fibers are but also what goes into producing them and even what it takes to get them to us.

So this got me thinking some more (dangerous stuff, that is) Not all of us can do everything that is required to be truly "green", but we all can do something. I imagine you have begun to change your light bulbs as we have and the price of gas is forcing us all to drive less. I carry cloth sacks in the car, thinking I will take them in to the store next time I go grocery shopping. The reality is that they have never left my car. I always forget to take them in. When I ask the baggers to fill the plastic bags FULL, they double them so they don't break... (DUH!!)

Then I remembered that when I was growing up in Germany we had what was called a Netz (a net). You carried that right in your pocket or your purse so when you went shopping you were never without a container to bring your purchases home in.

my work in progress So now I am working on my version of "The Net"
The yarn I am using is not eco-friendly by strict definitions, but if you were to make yourself a couple of these "Nets" you would surely do your part for Earth Day. I will be at the store all day Tuesday. Come in and I'll show you how far I have come with mine and give you the pattern for it. If you can't come in, send me an e-mail and I'll send you a copy of the pattern. Enjoy!

The earliest records of spinning date back nearly eight millennia, to Peru where Pakucho meant 'brown cotton' in ancient Inca. Today, native-spun Pakucho cotton is grown in natural colors. No pesticides, herbicides, or other agri-chemicals are used to grow or color these yarns. All harvesting and color sorting is done by hand, just as it has been since the domestication of cotton in Peru over 4,500 years ago.

On a personal note:

Earlier this year we thought that Dutch would not be with us much longer. His health was declining very fast and I just knew if things continued at that pace, we would soon be saying our last good-bye's. Knowing that I easily fall into the caregiver's role (I have filled it so often), I realized that I was on the slippery slope of acceptance. Acceptance is not a bad thing, I just wanted to make sure that this was the path God wanted us to be on. So I asked Dutch: "How would you like people to pray for you?" He thought about it for a minute and then exclaimed: "I want to be HEALED!!"

So the elders of our church came together and laid hands on Dutch and prayed over him. We joined the little faith we each had to each other's faith, thinking: prayer can't hurt!....

Now we're in April and Dutch is still going strong. We gratefully accept whatever time we are given.....

A few days ago we got another admonition from the doctor to loose weight. "Drop him off a mile from home and take all his money away" was his advice. Well I haven't dropped him off a full mile from home but it is great to see him out walking again. Isn't God good?

Philippians 4:6
6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
