Measure the doll/ bear. You must have:

the arm c: the length of the arm d: the measurement of the widest part
of the arm at the shoulder e: the measurement around the head f: the length
if the arm
Work a sample swatch from the yarn you will be using. Cast on 10
sts and work a 1 1/2" swatch to determine the number of stitches per inch
you will get with your yarn. 10: (width of swatch ) = sts per inch
Now
you have to do a little math: Take 1/2 of the " a " measurement
times the number of stitches per inch you are getting from your sample. Theses
are the amount of stitches you will have to cast on.
Knit in 1x1 ribbing for
one inch on a needle which is 2 sizes smaller than the needle you will be using.
Change to the larger needle and knit in the pattern of your choice to the
underarm " b " measurement.
Cast on ( number of stitches per inch
times length of arm ) on each side. Knit in pattern for 1/2 the number of
inches of the " d " measurement.
Determine the number of stitches
covered by one half of the " e" measurement. Cast OFF these stitches
at the CENTER of your work. This will be your neck opening. Cast ON the same amount
of stitches on the very next row to cover the part which was just cast off. You are now at the halfway point.
Knit in pattern 1/2 the number of
inches of the " d " measurement.
Cast off. ( number of stitches
per inch times length of arm) on each side.
Knit in pattern for the same
length as # 5.
Change to smaller needles and knit in 1x1 ribbing for 1 inch.
Cast off.
To finish, sew side seams and work collar if desired.
To work
a collar, pick up stitches around the neckline on double pointed needles of the
same size as the ones used for the ribbing. Work 4 rows in 1x1 ribbing. Cast off.
